Sweaters are basically synonymous with wool, but some of us can’t or choose not to wear wool. If we also want to avoid synthetics, then cotton is likely the answer. I personally love a lighter-weight cotton sweater for those days when you want to be cozy but also need to breathe. I’ll have some of my favorite lightweight sweaters listed below but I think the trickiest cotton sweaters to find are the extra thick knit sweaters that actually keep you warm on the coldest days, and I love the little collection I’ve built. This post showcases many of my favorites and more that I have not yet tried by showing you the best sustainable cotton sweaters of 2026.
Every brand listed has great sustainable attributes listed as well. While some are organic and others are not, they’re all ethically made and use non-toxic dyes.
I have a good amount of sweaters listed on Sensibly in cotton and wool, and will mark those available on the site accordingly. I’ll also indicate any of these brands that I’ve tried and loved- many of which remain favorites in my wardrobe year after year.
The Knotty Ones
Available on Sensibly. Price around $250-$450. Brand Location- Lithuania
I absolutely love The Knotty Ones! These sweaters are beautifully and ethically made and the knits are thick and cozy. I appreciate that they have such interesting designs!
The fair trade, Oeko-tex certified, organic cotton Delčia sweater is my personal favorite and I have it in two classic colors but am considering getting one of their great seasonal colors as well. They also have a pre-loved section of their website.

Mila.Vert
Average price $250-$350. Brand location-Slovenia
Mila.Vert almost closed down last year and I was so upset about it! I’m glad to say they are still running! They have a few great 100% organic cotton sweaters that are fantastic! I have the knitted triangle sweater (pictured below) and it is great! I also have the rice cube sweater from past seasons. They have a few new designs this year that look great including some great textured cardigans.

Paneros
Available on Sensibly. Price $139-$179. Brand Location-United States
Paneros really shines in the cardigan department but they also have a great lightweight cotton sweater, the Sloane. It comes in multiple colors and a stripe pattern as pictured below (I have this black and white striped one which is the perfect lightweight breathable sweater). The cardigans come in different silhouettes and while most are also lightweight cotton, the Emily is a nice thick cozy cotton cardigan.

Twothirds
Available on Sensibly. Price $128-$228. Brand location- Spain and United States.
This B-Corp Certified Brands has multiple knitwear options in cotton, wool, and recycled materials. I personally love the textured knits of the Theresa (pictured below) and the Aran greencastle knit though I have not yet tried them. They are listed as a lighterweight and have the perfect oversized cut.

Komodo
Available on Sensibly. Price $100-$175. Brand Location- United Kingdom
Komodo claims to be the original Ethical brand and has many cotton sweaters/jumpers. They have solids and patterns and most are lightweight. Some of the sweaters are a cotton/Tencel blend.

Known Supply
Price $78-$128. Brand Location- United States
Known Supply has great affordable, 100% GOTS certified organic sweaters. Many of these also have patterns which can be particularly hard to find. They range from lightweight to heavier-weight. I have the Dallas sweater (pictured below) and really like it. I’d call it a mid-heavier weight sweater. The sweaters are Fair Trade Certified and many go up to 4X which is also an anomaly amongst many small sustainable brands. The brand is working on circular efforts and partners with a clothing recycler and plans to create a secondhand section of their website.

Fair Indigo
Available on Sensibly with a discount! Prices $75-$229
Fair Indigo is a favorite of mine for basics and while they don’t have a ton of options, they do have some basic sweaters that pack a punch. The ribbed turtlenecks look particularly great (pictured below) but I have not personally tried them. I have a discount code built into Sensibly that works for anything on the site.

Jan N June
Prices around $135
Hamburg based Jan N June has cotton and wool sweaters but I think where they really shine is the organic cotton cardigans. These chunky knits are a perfect classic cool. They have great basic cotton sweaters as well.
