Sustainable suiting is my favorite. A great women’s suit makes me feel powerful but they seems to still be a bit of an anonomoly in the sustainable fashion world. Lounge wear, basics, denim? No problem but something actually sophisticated enough to wear to work? It can be a tall order. This post looks at sustainable and ethical fashion brands creating women’s suits.
Finding great suiting gets even more complicated depending on what make up your sustainable values. If you want something ethically produced that is classic in style and will last for years then you may have quite a bit of luck with suiting made from Polyester- after all, it is one of if not the most popular material in clothing manufacturing- and I get it, who wants a wrinkly suit and/or one that has to be dry cleaned?
Personally, I stay away from polyester for the environmental impact, microfibers, toxicity, lack of biodegradability, and because I want my skin to breathe. Polyester just makes me itch after a little while! Some of the brands below do have some polyester suiting options but all included have other options that are non-toxic, made from lesser impact or natural materials as well.
My sensitive skin also makes wool suiting a no-go, but unlike polyester, it is something I recommend and can be the perfect suiting material for many people.
So for this round up we will include wool, other natural materials, and lower impact materials such as Tencel and Cupro.
I will categorize the brands below by location as well as give an idea of price. Average blazer/jacket prices are marked using $-$$$$.
Any brands available on Sensibly will be marked with a *. Any discount codes will be listed as well. To see our curated list of suiting click here.
